About EMeRG

Our History

The George Washington University Emergency Medical Response Group (EMeRG) is a student-based volunteer organization licensed to provide Basic Life Support and serve the GW Foggy Bottom campus. We strive to serve the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year. All of our members are licensed Emergency Medical Technicians at the Basic level or higher in the District of Columbia.While our primary mission is to provide outstanding emergency medical care, we also seek to provide valuable educational opportunities for our members as well as to promote the general health and wellbeing of the Foggy Bottom/GW Community. We arrange monthly Continuing Medical Education classes and engage in vigorous precepting and call review activities to ensure that our members continue to serve as excellent medical providers. We also actively look for and welcome any opportunity to engage in community outreach activities.EMeRG is proud to be composed of undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of major areas of study. While we do have pre-med students, a large portion of our membership is comprised of students whose fields of study are non-science or non-medical related. The members of EMeRG serve because of our passion for public service and emergency medicine, and these motivating factors drive us to continue to excel as healthcare providers regardless of our areas of collegiate study.
The George Washington University Emergency Medical Response Group (EMeRG) was founded in 1994 by Emergency Health Services students Jacob Abbott and Geoff Shapiro. EMeRG began and currently operates as a licensed BLS agency in the District of Columbia. Campus bike response began in 1996. Responders provided Basic Life Support and treatment to patients and then transferred patient care to DC Fire and EMS (DCFEMS) when transportation to the Emergency Department was needed. Patient care capabilities were expanded in 2001 when EMeRG obtained a Quick Response Vehicle (QRV) to better respond on campus. The QRV decreased response time and increased equipment providers could utilize during response.EMeRG began its first ambulance operations in the fall of 2008. The patient care abilities of the organization increased as care providers were able to not only respond and assess patients on scene, but transport them to the hospital as well. EMeRG providers are also able to work more directly with DC Fire and EMS Advanced Life Support, when necessary, to treat patients requiring more interventions outside of the Basic Life Support capabilities of EMeRG. In the spring of 2009, EMeRG obtained an additional ambulance for campus and community response.EMeRG has a close relationship with many other organizations on campus; because of this, standby support is provided for many events on campus including games hosted at the Smith Center. EMeRG also regularly provides standby medical care for training exercises for the University Police Department.EMeRG is a member of the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation (NCEMSF). The organization has served as National Conference host in 2003 and co-host, with Georgetown University Emergency Medical Response Service, GERMS, in 2009.

Today, EMeRG is proud to announce the launch of our mobile site. EMeRG Adopts Alternative Name; GW EMS
Police, Fire, and EMS: the three generic terms for the major branches of public safety. Terms universally recognized by both those in the public safety community and by the civilian population. The simplicity of categorizing public safety organizations under one these veils is critical. First, consider a Mass Casualty Incident on the George Washington University Campus. The primary responders would be the George Washington University Police Department and the Emergency Medical Response Group. However, our location in the District of Columbia would simultaneously warrant responses from the DC Metropolitan Police Department, the Secret Service Uniformed Division, Park Police, and DC Fire and EMS. MPD, Secret Service, Park Police, and GW Police vehicles and uniforms are clearly labeled Police. Every first responder on that scene would understand that their duties primarily involve scene safety, crowd control, and traffic control. Similarly, DC Fire and EMS vehicles and uniforms are clearly labeled as EMS, meaning their primary duties would involve providing Emergency Medical Services to the first responders and the civilians on scene. Somewhere in this high stress, high speed situation the first responders and civilians on scene would have to decipher the acronym EMeRG in order to determine our organizational purpose. With this issue in mind, EMeRG is proud to announce its use of GW EMS as an alternative name. This name will undoubtedly alleviate our concerns in the transparency of our functional identity while allowing us to clearly label ourselves under one of the three major branches of public safety. With that considered, we are not forsaking our true name. We are, and will remain, the Emergency Medical Response Group. EMeRG is who we are. GW EMS is what we do.

News- Breast Cancer Awareness

EMeRG Cares; Breast Cancer Awareness Week
With nearly one in eight women in the United States developing invasive breast cancer sometime in their life and approximately 2,140 new cases of invasive breast cancer expected to be diagnosed this year in men according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, breast cancer is perhaps one of the biggest issues concerning public health in this country. Both medically and socioculturally, knowledge of this disease and its implications has slowly permeated the minds of Americans over recent decades and the search for the cure is of great interest in the scientific community, thanks to the efforts of great organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. These groups promote educational awareness about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, raise money for biomedical research grants in breast cancer, emphasize the importance of regular mammograms to detect earlier stages of cancer, and encourage overall health and wellness.As part of a new program geared towards public health outreach and education entitled EMeRG Cares, The George Washington University emergency medical service unit, EMeRG, has been pinning pink ribbons on their uniforms on shift as a public sign of breast cancer awareness. EMeRG is not just a service dedicated to emergency health on campus, but also public health of the community at large; its members are proud supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month, EMeRG encourages both men and women to see if breast cancer runs in your family to consider your genetic risk, and, if you are a woman over the age of 40, to consider scheduling a mammogram with your physician.

In the scenario where there s a medical emergency, our standby service gives you peace of mind, knowing that trained providers are already on scene.

EMeRG recruits new members every semester. Membership is open to students, faculty and staff of The George Washington University, including graduate and part-time students. Below you can find information about the prerequisites for joining, how to fulfill those prerequisites, and some benefits of being a member of EMeRG.

How Do I Join?

Membership offers the chance to gain valuable and practical medical experience while providing a community service. EMeRG provides EMS coverage at both on-campus and off-campus events, such as concerts, GW Basketball Games, and the Marine Corps Marathon. Members are in the unique and exciting position of being a first responder to the GW community. One of the biggest benefits of membership is knowing that you have made a difference in someone's life.Members are eligible to receive additional benefits as well, such as early class registration, continuing medical education and specialized training, such as EMS bike training. In addition, we offer CPR Instructor classes, which give you the opportunity to be paid for teaching CPR classes and other functions.Finally, while all normal EMeRG shifts are volunteer, some special events are paid. Members who are CPR Instructors may also be paid for teaching CPR classes.

The Mayor's Special Events Task Group has mandated that on-site EMS personnel must be present for all events, large and small. On-site First Aid is crucial to event safety and to ensure the well-being of participants and staff.The Department of Fire and EMS has expressed that a necessary provision of planning any special event involves the consideration of First Aid and/or Emergency Medical Services. To guarantee the safety of persons attending a special event, the event planner is responsable for ensuring the existance of appropriately licensed/cerified on-site medical personnel. On-Site EMS is a benefit to any special event, because it:Increases access to immediate medical care and the appropriate treatment.Ensures the development of an appropriate medical response plan, prepared by licensed/certified command personnel with event medicine experience.Allows direct radio communications with the Department of Fire and EMS, local and applicable Federal law enforcement agencies, and the District's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.The following guidelines have been established by the Mayor's Special Events Task Group, to maintain the appropriate emergency medical coverage for a given event:1- 1,999 People- On-Site personnel recommended based on event needs and covereage size.2,000- 9,999 People- On-Site pesonnel required with a fixed First Aid site staffed by licensed/certified EMS personnel. 10,000-19,000- On-Site personnel required with a fixed First Aid site and a Basic Life Support Ambulance to transport patients to the appropriate medical facility.
